Bhutan is transitioning its national self-sovereign identification system from Polygon to Ethereum, allowing nearly 800,000 citizens to verify their identification and access government services. According to Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi, the integration with Ethereum has been completed, and the data migration process will be finished by Q1/2026. Ms. Miyaguchi, along with Vitalik Buterin, Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk, attended the launch ceremony.

This is the first time in the world that a country has implemented a citizen identification system on Ethereum. Previously, Bhutan used Polygon and Hyperledger Indy. In addition, Bhutan has also become one of the most active countries in cryptocurrency, currently holding 11,286 BTC worth approximately 1.31 billion USD, ranking 5th globally. This country mines Bitcoin using renewable energy and is said to be expanding other blockchain initiatives.
