Vitalik Buterin discusses the development of Ethereum, AI risks, and personal interests.
In a recent Q&A, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin answered a series of questions covering various fields such as personal interests, Ethereum development, and artificial intelligence.
When it comes to personal hobbies, Vitalik mentioned that his favorite books include "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" and Scott Alexander's sci-fi novel "Unsong". He also revealed that his longest running record is 44 kilometers, taking 4 hours, while his longest walking record reached 113 kilometers, taking 23 hours and 12 minutes.
In the Zuzalu experiment, Vitalik believes that this flash city project has been successful and has validated several core assumptions. He expressed a desire to see a deeper adoption of technologies that are free, open, decentralized, and privacy-focused in the future, such as using ETH for payments on L2 and utilizing more secure communication tools.
When it comes to L2 governance, Vitalik tends to minimally fix L2 functionalities at the L1 level. He hopes that in the coming years, L2 will reach a stage where a safety committee's arbitration is only needed when there are discrepancies in different proof systems.
For the potential catastrophic risks facing humanity, Vitalik lists artificial intelligence and bioengineering pandemics as the top two, with nuclear war and AI-enhanced totalitarianism also included. He considers climate issues to be around fifth place, while resource depletion does not concern him much.
In terms of artificial intelligence, Vitalik predicts that AGI ( artificial general intelligence ) will emerge between 2029 and 2200, and he estimates the probability of human extinction to be about 10%. He expressed hope to see a path that can retain human subjectivity, but expects it will ultimately shift towards non-biological forms.
Vitalik also shared some concerns about the cryptocurrency industry, including the introduction of tokens into various things, capital misallocation, deviation from principles, unrealistic purist beliefs, and unnecessary conflicts.
To promote the relationship between the Ethereum and Bitcoin communities, Vitalik suggested jointly supporting non-blockchain freedom and privacy tools, such as end-to-end encrypted communication and internet anonymity.
