Ubisoft and Arbitrum to Launch Web3 Shooter 'Captain Laserhawk' on December 18
Gate's gaming division and French gaming giant Ubisoft have set December 18 as the official release date for "Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E.", a top-down shooter with Web3 capabilities.
Set in Ubisoft's gaming universe, the game features a cast of characters from popular titles such as Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Rayman, Assassin's Creed, Beyond Good and Evil, The Crew, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, and Watch Dogs.
Captain Laserhawk's gameplay blends classic top-down shooter mechanics with competitive leaderboards and Web3 features. Narratively, it serves as a media spin-off of the 2023 Netflix-based television program, "Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix". This title is among Ubisoft's roster of games exploring Web3, blockchain, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
NFTs and Web3 Integration
Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E. is set to launch on the Ethereum layer-2 network Arbitrum, accompanied by an NFT minting event via Magic Eden, scheduled to begin on December 11.
A social media post from the official Captain Laserhawk game account on X.com elaborated that the free mint players will receive is "packed with utilities", including governance votes and "exclusive collectibles inspired by Ubisoft legends like Rayman and Splinter Cell."
Nina Rong, head of partnerships at Arbitrum Foundation, stated that the game's launch marks a pivotal moment for the space:
"Today's minting, and next week's launch, will be a watershed moment as we look to the future of game development and player experience. Forever, players have followed the plots, character arcs, and game designs given to them. Now, that changes."
Blockchain-Based Gaming Landscape
The Web3 gaming space continues to show signs of growth. NFT sales have shown steady increases since October, with the first week of December recording an estimated sales volume of $187 million.
Meanwhile, the Beam Foundation is poised to debut a $150 million fund to boost Web3 gaming in Abu Dhabi.
Despite the industry's challenges following the 2021 NFT boom and subsequent market destabilization, Web3 games and blockchain-based entertainment applications continue to demonstrate optimistic indicators as 2025 approaches.
