The Story of the World's Most Expensive Pizza: The Bitcoin Legacy
May 22, 2010. A day that changed crypto history forever. What happened? Something seemingly ordinary that turned extraordinary.
The beginning
Laszlo Hanyecz was just a Florida programmer who got into Bitcoin early. Back then Bitcoin was practically worthless. Like, $0.003 worthless. Most people thought it was just some tech experiment going nowhere. A digital toy, really.
The historic transaction
Then Laszlo had this idea. Kind of crazy in retrospect. He posted on BitcoinTalk:
"I would like to pay 10,000 Bitcoin for two large pizzas. If you're interested, please contact me."
Someone bit. A couple days passed. Papa John's pizzas arrived at Laszlo's door. Bitcoin left his digital wallet.
The incredible value transformation
Those 10,000 bitcoins? Worth about $30 when he bought those pizzas.
By 2017? Skyrocketed to around $200 million.
September 2025? We're talking over $600 million now. For pizza! It's not entirely clear if anyone could have predicted this wild value swing. The most expensive pizza ever eaten, no doubt.
Laszlo's perspective
You'd think he'd be devastated. Surprisingly, he's not. Laszlo says:
"I didn't know Bitcoin would reach this level. To me, it was amazing that I could use cryptocurrency to buy something real."
No regrets. Or so he claims.
A different kind of expensive pizza
Funny thing. The actual most expensive pizza you can buy in 2025 is this Louis XIII Pizza from Italy. Costs $12,000. Fancy stuff—caviar, lobster, gold flakes. Actually gold! But it seems almost cheap compared to Laszlo's $600 million mistake. Laszlo's pizza became valuable after the fact. The Louis XIII tries too hard from the start.
The legacy continues
Crypto evolved. From weird internet money to something your grandma asks about at Thanksgiving.
Small choices can blow up in ways nobody sees coming. Good or bad.
May 22nd is now "Bitcoin Pizza Day." Crypto enthusiasts celebrate it yearly. First real Bitcoin purchase. The journey from digital nothing to everything. All because a hungry programmer wanted some pizza.
