Expected date and details of the Starlink IPO

robot
Abstract generation in progress

Starlink, the satellite internet division of SpaceX, has generated great interest in the financial market due to a possible initial public offering (IPO). This company, which offers high-speed connectivity and low latency even in remote locations, has recently reached 4 million subscribers and controls approximately 7,000 satellites.

Current status of the Starlink IPO

As of October 2025, Starlink is still not publicly traded and no specific date has been announced for its IPO. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has indicated that Starlink's public offering would not occur before 2025, and possibly later.

In 2021, Musk explained that Starlink would go public “once we can reasonably predict cash flow well,” adding that it would be “at least a few years before Starlink's revenues are reasonably predictable.”

In November 2023, Musk reported that Starlink had “reached cash flow break-even.” Shortly thereafter, rumors surfaced about a possible IPO in 2024, but Musk quickly denied them.

Financial Performance of Starlink

In 2023, Starlink's revenues overshadowed those of SpaceX, reaching $4.2 billion, surpassing the $3.5 billion generated by the core rocket launch business. However, according to anonymous sources cited by BNN Bloomberg in April 2024, Starlink “still spends more cash than it generates,” and its accounting is described as “more of an art than a science.”

Investment Outlook

Although it is not possible to invest directly in Starlink at the moment, there are some alternatives for investors interested in the satellite internet sector:

  1. Tesla shares (NASDAQ: TSLA): Musk has indicated that he will try to give preference to Tesla's long-term shareholders when Starlink goes public.

  2. Platforms for accredited investors: Some platforms allow accredited investors to buy shares of pre-IPO companies, including SpaceX.

  3. Other satellite internet companies:

    • Iridium Communications (NASDAQ: IRDM)
    • Globalstar (NYSEAMERICAN: GSAT)
    • EchoStar (NASDAQ: SATS)
    • ViaSat (NASDAQ: VSAT)
    • Gilat Satellite Networks (NASDAQ: GILT)

Market Potential of Starlink

Starlink presents a huge market potential due to:

  1. The growing demand for better global connectivity.
  2. The scarcity of viable options for edge computing.
  3. Trends such as distributed work and the proliferation of Internet of Things devices.

However, it is important to remain cautious. Despite the potential of Starlink, there is currently a great deal of speculation and hyperbole surrounding the company. Potential investors should ensure they fully understand what to expect, based on concrete data and not just on the generated hype.
