What is the TRM and why does it matter when using crypto in Colombia?
When I exchanged my first digital dollars for Colombian pesos, I came across this term: TRM. At first, I didn’t understand its relevance, but I soon discovered it would significantly affect my crypto operations.
The TRM (Representative Market Rate) is simply the official value of the dollar against the Colombian peso calculated and published daily by the Financial Superintendency during business days. It is, essentially, the “official” dollar in Colombia.
In the crypto world, this rate can determine whether you buy stablecoins like USDT or USDC at a convenient price or end up paying an unnecessary markup. I've seen many take advantage of moments when the TRM is low to convert their pesos to digital dollars, positioning themselves better before investing in other digital assets.
If you use exchange platforms, the TRM directly influences the prices you will see in P2P markets or the conversion costs between local currency and crypto assets.
Understanding this rate is essential to optimize entry and exit strategies, especially if your main capital is in Colombian pesos.
