Milei awakens interest in free market ideas in Latin America
Milei has stood out for years as a strong advocate of the free market. The countries in the region are beginning to elect new leaders adept at de-bureaucratization.
The victory of Argentine President Javier Milei in the recent legislative elections reignited the debate on free market ideas and economic deregulation. His party, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), received nearly 41% of the votes, expanding its representation to 93 deputies and 19 senators. This growth gives him greater negotiating power to advance his agenda in Congress.
Although the result consolidates Milei's political leadership in Argentina, its impact transcends borders. In neighboring countries, libertarian and pro-market ideas are beginning to gain strength.
On social media, users highlighted how the phenomenon of the president sparks curiosity in other countries. An Argentine content creator shared her experience in Brazil.
“Here in Brazil, almost all Ubers ask me about Milei when they realize I am Argentine. For them, it is like a success from a brother country. People more related to technology or finance are more reserved in their opinions, but when a channel of trust is opened, they also support Milei. There are few, but at least five Brazilians I know are thinking about moving to Buenos Aires, even though it is more expensive than São Paulo,” he reported.
For several years, even before starting his political campaign, the Argentine president has shown himself to be a strong advocate for reducing public spending, eliminating bureaucratic hurdles, and protecting private property.
Ideological Movement in Latin America
Milei's new advance coincides with a resurgence of economic openness ideas in Latin America. A recent example is Bolivia, where Rodrigo Paz Pereira achieved a historic victory with 54.5% of the votes. The South American country has put an end to nearly two decades of hegemony of the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS).
For many analysts, Paz's rise marks a political shift towards transparency, state efficiency, and economic freedom. These are pillars that also resonate with the liberal vision advocated by the Argentine president.
His government plan, called Agenda 50/50, proposes to allocate half of the public expenditure to the modernization of the State, integrating technologies such as cryptocurrency networks to combat corruption and optimize resources.
Additionally, Paz promotes the creation of a Foreign Exchange Stabilization Fund that includes the possibility of incorporating bitcoin (BTC) as part of the asset declaration. This, in a country that has just lifted its ban on digital assets after a decade.
