Monad MONAD_NINE upgrade is here: significant optimization of memory costs and the addition of a reserve check mechanism
【Crypto World】Monad officially announced the “MONAD_NINE” network upgrade plan, scheduled to be activated simultaneously on the testnet and mainnet in the first half of February 2026. This upgrade is quite significant, covering three major core improvements.
Among them, MIP-3 (Linear Memory) changes the EVM memory expansion cost from a quadratic algorithm to linear computation—sounds a bit abstract, but the practical effect is a substantial reduction in resource consumption. It also limits the memory usage per transaction to 8 MB, which can improve system predictability and give developers a clearer understanding.
MIP-4 (Reserve Balance Introspection) introduces a new opcode that allows smart contracts to check in real-time whether they violate reserve balance regulations during execution. The benefit of this is that contracts can adjust logic promptly or rollback directly, greatly reducing risk.
MIP-5 (Fusaka EIP Activation) synchronously activates three standards—EIP-7823, EIP-7883, and EIP-7939—within the Ethereum Fusaka upgrade. This demonstrates Monad’s effort to keep pace with the Ethereum ecosystem, ensuring compatibility and interoperability. Overall, these three improvements focus on efficiency, security, and ecosystem alignment.
