扫地机, 洗碗机, 烘干机, 呼吸机. The character 机 (machine) remains the core, no matter how many variations, that’s logic. English: vacuum cleaner, dishwasher, clothes dryer, ventilator. Each word is a completely new code, with no blood relation to the others. This leads to: a Chinese person who knows 3000 Chinese characters can read newspapers and books, but an American who knows 3000 words might be semi-literate.
3. The contrast between Chinese and English lies in the association between words: Chinese: 葡萄 (grape), 葡萄干 (raisin), 葡萄酒 (wine). English: Grape, Raisin, Wine. If you haven't specifically memorized these words, it’s hard to connect them literally. In many professional fields, English also especially likes to create words from people's names and place names (like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease). This word formation method is not only irregular but also exclusive. If you're not in that circle, you can't even get past the threshold.
4. To summarize, it’s not about which language is more advanced, but Chinese has basically unlocked a cheat code for reducing the learning cost for the masses. Meanwhile, the complexity of English has invisibly become a social stratification filter. The elite掌握着那一套庞大而复杂的专业词库,而普通人往往被挡在这些屎山代码之外。这也就解释了为什么很多时候,我们会觉得老美有一种清澈的愚蠢,可能不是脑子不好使,而是那门语言确实太难把世界简单地串联起来了。
