Apple has pushed updates for older Apple Watch models that cannot upgrade to watchOS26, including watchOS10.6.2, watchOS9.6.4, and watchOS6.3.1; and for older Macs that cannot upgrade to macOS26, including macOS11.7.11 and macOS Catalina Security Update 2026-001.

Regarding the update details, IT Home cites a blog post stating that based on the log content, the core of this push is to update the “root certificates.” These certificates are credentials used by devices to securely handshake with Apple servers. The logs explicitly warn that if users ignore this update, starting from January 2027, affected devices may experience functionality failures.

The impacted services include the basic “device activation” function, as well as iMessage and FaceTime services that rely on secure connections. In other words, failing to update could result in devices becoming bricked or limited to offline use.

In terms of hardware compatibility, watchOS10.6.2 is mainly targeted at users of Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, and the first-generation Apple Watch SE.

watchOS9.6.4 is the final version supporting devices like iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. Since these phones only support up to iOS16 and cannot upgrade to iOS17 or higher, their paired watches are also stuck on the watchOS9 branch.
