The film “Bitconned,” available since January 2024 on the streaming platform, immerses viewers in the shady universe of Centra Tech and its charismatic founder.

Ray Trapani and Centra Tech Scam: $25 Million Raised in 2017

In 2017, during the peak of Bitcoin speculation frenzy, Ray Trapani and his partners Sohrab “Sam” Sharma and Robert Farkas created Centra Tech, a platform claiming to revolutionize access to cryptocurrency through an innovative debit card. However, this appealing project hid a very different reality.

Ray Trapani and his partners launched an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) to raise funds, promising thousands of investors a technological revolution. The operation collected a staggering $25 million from gullible participants. This apparent success was based on materially false statements and strategically omitted information designed to encourage investments.

The illegality of this fundraising was eventually uncovered, leading to formal charges against Ray Trapani and his accomplices. The legal consequences were severe: Ray Trapani pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $2,608,869 in restitution, along with substantial prison time. His co-founder Sohrab Sharma also pleaded guilty and was fined $37,701,966—one of the heaviest sanctions ever imposed in a crypto fraud case.

The director does not hesitate to give Ray Trapani himself a platform, who openly discusses his involvement in this meticulously orchestrated scam.

Through testimonies and trial archives, the documentary depicts how Ray Trapani, fascinated since childhood by illegal shortcuts to wealth, carried out one of the most ambitious scams in the sector. The indictment reveals the extent of the crimes: conspiracy, financial fraud, telecommunication fraud against Centra Tech, criminal acts involving Venmo and Miami Exotics, online credit card fraud, illegal firearm possession, and drug law violations.

U.S. Response: Formation of the DNMDCC Task Force Against Scammers

Fraud cases in the crypto universe are not limited to Centra Tech. The once-promising SafeMoon project had to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, exposing another major scam in the sector. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accused its team members of securities law violations, while the U.S. Department of Justice made arrests for alleged fraud.

These multiple scandals prompted authorities to take drastic measures. In June 2023, the U.S. government created a specialized task force called Darknet Marketplace and Digital Currency Crimes (DNMDCC), tasked with combating crypto scams nationwide. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of the threats posed by Ray Trapani and other scammers in a sector where regulator vigilance has never been more necessary.
