Apple M5 Pro / Max adopts a new unified architecture, significantly enhancing AI computing performance
Tech Home, March 3 — Apple today announced the launch of the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, powering the new MacBook Pro models.
According to Apple, the M5 Pro and M5 Max feature a first-of-its-kind integrated architecture designed by Apple. This advanced design combines two chip dies into a single system-on-a-chip (SoC) using cutting-edge packaging technology. By employing high-bandwidth, low-latency techniques, the two third-generation 3-nanometer dies are fused into one. These dies include a powerful new central processing unit, scalable graphics processor, media engine, unified memory controller, neural engine, and Thunderbolt 5 controller.
As reported by Tech Home, the new central processor in the M5 Pro and M5 Max features 18 cores, including 6 high-performance cores and 12 efficiency cores. The high-performance cores, initially introduced as the performance cores in the M5 chip, are now used across all products with M5 chips—including MacBook Air, 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro—under the “High-Performance Core” name. These cores are designed for maximum performance. The M5 Pro and M5 Max also introduce entirely new performance cores optimized for better energy efficiency and multi-threaded performance to meet professional workload demands. Combined with the high-performance cores, these chips deliver up to 2.5 times the multi-threaded performance of M1 Pro and M1 Max.
Building on the M5 chip, the M5 Pro expands to a maximum of 18 cores in the CPU paired with a new generation of graphics processor with up to 20 cores, each equipped with neural network accelerators. The new CPU architecture in the M5 Pro adds four cores compared to the M4 Pro, resulting in up to 30% higher multi-threaded performance for professional workloads. The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory and a maximum bandwidth of 307GB/s. With these features, peak graphics performance for AI tasks is over four times higher than the M4 Pro and more than six times higher than the M1 Pro.
The M5 Pro features a performance-enhanced shader core supporting second-generation dynamic cache and hardware-accelerated mesh shading technology, significantly boosting graphics performance—up to 20% better than the M4 Pro and up to 2.2 times better than the M1 Pro. Leveraging Apple’s third-generation ray tracing engine, the M5 Pro offers up to 35% higher graphics performance in applications utilizing this rendering technology.
The M5 Max shares the same groundbreaking graphics architecture as the M5 Pro, integrating an 18-core CPU with up to 40 cores in the graphics processor, doubling the core count of the M5 Pro. The new CPU architecture provides up to 15% higher multi-threaded performance compared to the M4 Max. The M5 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory and a maximum bandwidth of 614GB/s, excelling in handling complex scenes, massive data sets, and generating more tokens for large language models. When processing AI tasks, peak graphics performance exceeds four times that of the previous generation and over six times that of the M1 Max.
The M5 Max’s graphics performance is up to 20% higher than the M4 Max and 2.2 times higher than the M1 Max. For applications using ray tracing, the M5 Max offers up to 30% higher graphics performance compared to the M4 Max.
