Trump is strengthening his attack in the Middle East, hitting oil and gas fields, while Iran is retaliating against facilities linked to U.S. companies in the UAE, driving oil prices higher. Brent crude oil reached a high of $111.9. The U.S. dollar index rose 0.5%, back above 100. The night futures closed down 496 points, at 25,479. The China concept stock index dropped 2.1%, closing at 7,015. Tencent (00700) ADR is 6% lower than Hong Kong.

Fed Chair Powell emphasized that if inflation progress is not seen, rate cuts will not be considered. He expects rising energy prices to push up overall inflation expectations. Currently, the priority is to reduce commodity inflation. After Powell’s speech, the Dow once fell 800 points. The Dow closed down 768 points at 46,225. The S&P 500 dropped 1.36%, and the Nasdaq fell 1.46%.
