A surprise pregnancy has forced a 24-year-old college student in Oregon to confront adulthood faster than he expected.

With two years left on his business administration degree and almost no cash outside a tuition fund set aside for school, Thomas told “The Ramsey Show,” he and his girlfriend are trying to steady themselves after learning she is five weeks pregnant.

“To be honest, we’re both rather scared,” Thomas said, confirming to hosts Jade Warshaw and George Kamel, he is the child’s father. The news forced him to weigh school, work and whether to relocate as they prepare for a child.

A Future Accelerated

Thomas said he does not carry any debt and does not believe his 21-year-old girlfriend does either. She is not working or in school and is living with roommates while relying on government assistance.

He said he had already been thinking about marrying her before they found out she was pregnant. The difference now is timing. With the baby due in a few months and three hours between them, they must decide where to live and who will move.

“Well, that’s scary, dude," Kamel said. "You have a right to be rightfully spooked by all this.”

Warshaw encouraged them to focus first on practical steps, starting with making a plan to live in the same place and confirming what insurance coverage is in place before making any decisions about marriage.

Pressing Pause On School

Thomas said he has never worked full-time, choosing to focus on school. He chose business administration for its flexibility, though he remains unsure about a specific career path. He has considered architecture and psychology but said family members discouraged those options.

“Well, here’s the truth," Kamel said. "You might need to put a pause on education and just get to work doing anything.”

He added that immediate income may matter more than finishing the degree right now as the couple prepares for a child.

“You’ve got a nine-month runway here,” Kamel said.

A Tuition Fund, Not A Safety Net

Thomas said a college fund set up by his family is in his name and holds between $50,000 and $90,000. However, he said he has little accessible cash beyond that account.

Kamel urged him to find steady full-time work and begin stacking cash, while confirming her insurance coverage and expected medical costs.

“And don’t do anything really crazy until the doctor says," Warshaw said. "A lot of times people don’t even tell people that they’re pregnant until like what around the 12-week mark. So keep this close to your belt for now.”

As Thomas looks ahead to supporting a child, understanding different investment options may become part of his longer-term plan.
