Trump Holds Talks with Modi on Middle East Crisis, Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump spoke on Tuesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, as stated by reports.
Trump and Modi addressed the “ongoing situation” in the region, highlighting the “importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open,” according to US Ambassador Sergio Gor on X.
In a statement, Modi described the conversation as a “useful exchange of views” regarding the Middle East.
“India supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest. Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world. We agreed to stay in touch regarding efforts towards peace and stability,” the Indian prime minister said on X.
The regional escalation began after the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 deaths, including the former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with repeated drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military assets.
The Strait of Hormuz has also been largely disrupted since early March, affecting the daily flow of around 20 million barrels of oil, increasing shipping costs and driving global oil prices higher.
On Monday, Trump stated that he ordered a five-day pause on strikes targeting Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure, citing “very good and productive” talks with Tehran. Iranian officials, however, denied that any negotiations had taken place for weeks.
