Odaily Planet Daily reports that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the government plans to suspend political donations made through cryptocurrencies to address illegal fund flows and potential foreign interference risks.

During a parliamentary inquiry, Starmer indicated that this measure will be introduced as part of efforts to protect the UK’s democratic system, citing government assessments that suggest cryptocurrencies could pose “serious illegal financial risks.”

According to the proposal, the suspension is a temporary arrangement aimed at buying time for regulatory rule improvements. After the new regulations take effect, political parties will be required to refund any received crypto donations. Failure to comply within the grace period could result in criminal penalties.

This policy stems from a review report led by former senior civil servant Philip Rycroft, which recommended suspending the crypto donation mechanism until greater transparency can be ensured. In recent years, the role of cryptocurrencies in UK political financing has become increasingly controversial, especially after some parties received large crypto donations, raising ongoing concerns among regulators about the transparency of fund sources.

Odaily previously reported that the UK Labour Party has already suspended all cryptocurrency political donations.
