As a kid doing math problems about "filling a bathtub while draining it," I always thought it was absurd—who would be that stupid?

Growing up, I realized this is the modern survival philosophy.

We stay up late scrolling our phones while adding melatonin to our shopping carts; we talk about dieting while ordering bubble tea at midnight; we drink coffee to stay alive while taking sleeping pills to fall asleep. Psychologists call this "cognitive dissonance"—the pain of holding contradictory beliefs simultaneously.

But we're not stupid. We're just using self-sabotage to maintain a certain psychological balance. The answer to that math problem isn't "turn off the faucet"—it's "accept that this bathtub will never fill up."

In the adult world, there are no standard answers, only contradictory daily routines.
