On March 26, it was announced that the Boao Asia Forum 2026 Annual Conference was held from March 24 to 27 in Boao, Hainan. During the sub-forum “Global Economic Transformation: Asia’s Leading Role,” Zou Jiying, President and Chairperson of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), stated that the world is currently facing profound changes. Among the main forces driving transformation, climate change and digitalization are key factors, both bringing opportunities related to development. She pointed out that Asia’s dual transformation achievements are encouraging, with the region moving toward greener and smarter development, especially in renewable energy generation and energy transition.

Regarding the role of multilateral banks, Zou Jiying believes that multilateral banks, including AIIB, play a crucial role in investment, can facilitate financing, and expand this transformation pathway. First, they can invest in next-generation infrastructure to meet the rapidly growing energy demands of artificial intelligence and data centers. AIIB continues to expand investments in green power generation and smart technologies, such as modernized gearboxes and battery energy storage devices. The bank also increases support for related data storage software and equipment, including digitalization of traditional infrastructure. Second, financial innovation can help bridge financing gaps. Since 2022, AIIB has allocated nearly half of its financing quota to climate-related investments, increasing this proportion to over 70% by 2025. Third, AIIB supports regional cooperation and connectivity, where multilateral banks have unique advantages due to their understanding of complex cross-border payment situations. They can maintain neutrality in regional economic integration and policy coordination, promoting dialogue and cooperation.

Zou Jiying stated that this transformation is not only about new technologies but also about redefining a cleaner, smarter, and more closely collaborative growth model. It requires deepening regional integration, resource sharing, and mutual complementarity, mobilizing multilateral platforms to promote financial and knowledge integration, and making tangible, scalable, inclusive solutions for Asia’s sustainable development agenda.
