Argentina approves South Common Market-EU Free Trade Agreement

Argentina’s Congress approved the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union on the 26th. The Argentine Senate approved the Mercosur-EU free trade agreement with 69 votes in favor and 3 against. Earlier this month, the Argentine Chamber of Deputies approved the agreement with an overwhelming majority. Mercosur was founded by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay in 1995, and Bolivia officially joined in 2023. On January 17th, Mercosur and the EU officially signed the free trade agreement in Asunción, Paraguay, marking a decisive step toward creating one of the world’s largest free trade zones. After signing, the agreement must be ratified by each country’s parliament to take effect. The Uruguayan Congress approved the agreement on the 26th, becoming the first Mercosur member to do so.
