On March 27, according to a report from Russia on the 26th, Vyacheslav Nikonov, head of the Russian delegation and First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee, stated that Russian and American legislators held their first meeting in Washington in recent years, and that ‘the current situation is better than I expected.’ Nikonov indicated that restoring parliamentary contacts is possible, and the Russian delegation will continue to advance their work as planned. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that prior to the visit of Russian lawmakers to the U.S., they received instructions from President Putin and would report the results of the talks to him. It is noted that parliamentary contacts between Russia and the U.S. were interrupted in 2014 following Western sanctions against Russia, and both sides have made multiple attempts to restore dialogue, all of which have been unsuccessful.
