The former Managing Director and Chief Economist of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (00388), Ba Shusong, has reportedly gone missing and is under investigation. Mainland media quoted several sources indicating that the Ba Shusong case is being handled by the Shanghai police, involving alleged economic crimes with significant amounts.

Additionally, informed sources stated that the Ba Shusong case is connected to the case of Guo Yunzhao, an independent director at Guangfa Bank.

Reports indicate that Guo Yunzhao served as a director at Hainan Natural Rubber Industry Group Co., Ltd. from November 2018 to August 2021; he also served as a non-executive director of Yunkang Group Limited, from which he resigned in August 2023. At the same time, Guo Yunzhao is currently an independent director at Guangfa Bank.

Insiders say that Ba Shusong and Guo Yunzhao have known each other for many years and share a “teacher-student” relationship. In 2008, Ba Shusong was the first author, and Guo Yunzhao was the second author of the book “Research on Frontier Issues in Offshore Finance,” published by Peking University Press. In 2010, Ba Shusong, Guo Yunzhao, and Zhao Yong collaborated on the article “The Interaction between Bond Market Reform and the Internationalization of the Renminbi.”

Reports suggest that Ba Shusong’s case is linked to Guo Yunzhao’s case. Guo Yunzhao is also involved in economic-related cases and has been missing for a long time.
