【Caixin Media】 Over the past 40 years, men’s football has been one of the few areas in China that failed to achieve progress. Professional sports are among the most globally integrated industries; China and Europe should strengthen cooperation in the field of football. On March 24, Jiang Xiaojuan, chair of the National Data Expert Advisory Committee, made the above remarks during the 2026 annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia.

Before that, when discussing how China and Europe could strengthen cooperation, Michele Geraci, former deputy minister of Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development, quipped, “If you’re in semiconductors, come to China; if you’re in football, stay in Europe.” These remarks were meant to remind foreign investors to understand the direction of China’s industrial policy.
