【Caixin Global】 Global supply chains have entered an uncertain period. The lesson for businesses is that resilience, energy security, and decarbonization are becoming core elements of corporate competitiveness. Dino Otranto, Joint CEO of Fortescue, said in a Caixin interview during the 2026 annual meeting of the China Development Forum on March 23.

Otranto said that an unstable geopolitical environment has exposed the fragility of many systems that underpin the global economic system. Energy is at the core of this fragility. Most of the world’s fuel flows through just a few sea lanes and critical geopolitical chokepoints. Once conflicts disrupt these routes, the consequences quickly cascade—ultimately leading to inflation, higher industrial costs, and effects on economic stability. Therefore, these routes are all too easily turned into tools of geopolitical pressure.
