According to informed sources, the International Energy Agency is proposing to release its largest-ever emergency oil reserves, with a decision possibly coming later on Wednesday. The sources stated that as governments seek to curb the surge in energy prices triggered by the Middle East war, the International Energy Agency is recommending the release of approximately 300 to 400 million barrels of oil. The measures currently under consideration would exceed the 182 million barrels released to the market after the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. This Paris-based agency is responsible for coordinating the release of inventories among OECD countries. The Group of Seven has indicated that it supports “active measures” including the release of strategic reserves in principle, but has not provided details on the potential scale of intervention. The International Energy Agency stated that its 32 member countries hold over 1.2 billion barrels of emergency stockpiles, which includes the largest buffer reserve—the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
