A Tribute to California’s Spirit of Innovation Launched in 2018, the American Innovation program highlights four U.S. states each year, honoring their most iconic innovators and achievements.

For 2026, the state of California has chosen to celebrate Steve Jobs, whose visionary approach to design and technology transformed modern life. California Governor Gavin Newsom, who nominated Jobs for the program, said:

“Jobs connected people through technology. His work spanned not just computers but animation, music, communication, and art. He changed how people see the world.” Jobs’ portrait will join a select group of icons symbolizing creativity, courage, and the American dream.

Coin Design: A Visionary in the Hills of California According to the U.S. Mint’s design description, the coin will depict a young Steve Jobs seated before the rolling oak-covered hills of Northern California.

The artwork will capture his calm, reflective expression — a moment of inspiration representing the birth of ideas that changed the world. “The design embodies the connection between nature and technology,” the Mint said, “just as Jobs sought to make technology as intuitive and organic as nature itself.” The commemorative coin will launch in 2026 and retail for $13.25 USD.

Collectors can also purchase a special four-coin set featuring Steve Jobs, Dr. Norman Borlaug (the father of the Green Revolution), the Cray-1 supercomputer, and the invention of mobile refrigeration — priced at $27.50 USD. The Mint will also offer bags of 25 or 100 coins for collectors and enthusiasts.

Jobs’ Legacy Lives On Although Steve Jobs passed away in 2011, his “Think Different” philosophy continues to shape Apple’s DNA.
