Trump's tariffs may reverse America's import boom.
Jin10 data reported on April 10, trade management officials said that U.S. container imports in March increased by 11% year-on-year, continuing this year's substantial monthly rise. However, the escalating tariffs under Trump have cast a shadow on the outlook later this year. Supply chain technology provider Descartes stated on Thursday that U.S. port imports totaled 2,380,674 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in March. "The global supply chain is facing significant challenges, especially due to the fluctuations caused by the expansion of tariffs in the U.S. and retaliatory measures from major trading partners," said Jackson Wood, Descartes' industry strategy director. After Trump announced a postponement of reciprocal tariffs, the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates maintained their previous forecast that by the second half of 2025, container import freight volumes will decline by at least 20% year-on-year.
