New York announced the dismantling of the American drug trafficking group FireBunnyUSA, with Chinese head Wu Nan arrested and pleading guilty, and accomplices including postal workers.
The Manhattan District Attorney in New York announced the successful dismantling of one of the largest dark web drug trafficking organizations in U.S. history, FireBunnyUSA. The organization trafficked drugs through the dark web and illegally obtained up to 7.2 million dollars in revenue through a crypto assets exchange. The group's leader, Wu Nan (transliterated as NAN WU) (, along with four accomplices including a U.S. Postal Service employee, have all confessed to their roles in FireBunnyUSA and are facing multiple criminal charges.
Prosecutors revealed that the mastermind behind this drug trafficking operation, Wu Nan, originally from China, operated a dark web market called FireBunnyUSA, delivering over 10,000 packages of illegal drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy, and ketamine to customers across all 50 states and Washington D.C. Prosecutors stated that Wu's team assisted in transporting packages by purchasing shipping materials, renting U-Haul moving trailers, and using storage facilities. The group started selling on the dark web in 2019 and laundered money through Crypto Assets, ultimately amassing $7.2 million. Prosecutors pointed out that the operations of this drug trafficking organization not only involved drug sales but also included using Crypto Assets to transfer and conceal illegal income, with part of the proceeds exchanged through Monero and then laundered through cryptocurrency exchanges, hiding the true financial flow.
Main suspects exposed, US Postal Service employee provided consultation.
The prosecutor pointed out that in addition to the mastermind Wu Nan, other members of the gang include 30-year-old PENG PENG TANG, 38-year-old BOWEN CHEN, 22-year-old ZIXIANG LIN, and 35-year-old Katie Montgomery, an employee of the United States Postal Service. Shockingly, Katie Montgomery used her identity as a United States Postal Service employee to provide long-term advisory counseling for drug smuggling packages.
Drug trafficking proceeds are laundered through Crypto Assets to overseas exchanges.
Wu Nan initially operated his illegal business in the Flushing area of Queens, New York, sending drug packages across the country, until August 2022, when the group was forced to suspend operations after authorities executed a search warrant. Wu Nan and PENG PENG TANG together earned nearly $8 million in Bitcoin profits, and investigators found nearly $900,000 in Crypto Assets on Tang's phone. Some of the funds obtained by Wu and others were laundered, as they exchanged Monero (a highly untraceable or monitorable anonymous Crypto Asset) for Bitcoin. These Bitcoins subsequently entered Crypto Asset exchange accounts controlled by Wu Nan and PENG PENG TANG. During the money laundering process, at least $2.4 million worth of Bitcoin was sent to an offshore Crypto Asset exchange and laundered in the form of RMB.
Undercover agents conducted over ten sting purchases to investigate a drug trafficking organization. After gathering sufficient evidence, they launched an operation. In July 2022, federal investigators executed a search warrant at Wu Nan's residence in Flushing, where they found a large quantity of drugs and packaging materials, revealing the group's money laundering methods. Wu Nan and his accomplices received nearly 8 million dollars in Bitcoin, transferring part of the funds to overseas Crypto Assets exchanges for laundering.
In this case, Wu Nan ultimately admitted to the charge of second-degree trafficking in controlled substances and first-degree money laundering on April 3, 2025, and was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, plus five years of supervised release. In addition, the court also confiscated 20 bitcoins, 3,297 monero coins, and $12,857 in cash.
Prosecutor Bragg stated that this successful crackdown is a significant blow against criminal organizations that engage in illegal activities using the dark web. He also emphasized that regardless of whether these criminal activities occur on the dark web or on the streets, authorities will spare no effort in dismantling these criminal groups that harm social well-being.
