Hungarian Prime Minister announces agreement on "financial protection" with the United States

Orban met with Trump at the White House last Friday to seek an exemption from U.S. sanctions on Russian oil and natural gas, ultimately securing a one-year exemption. According to White House officials, Hungary also agreed to purchase approximately $600 million worth of U.S. liquefied natural gas. On his way back, Orban said, “I also reached an agreement with the U.S. President on a financial shield. If there are any external attacks targeting Hungary or its financial system, the U.S. commits to defending Hungary’s financial stability.” He did not specify the details of the agreement but emphasized that this means “Hungary will no longer have financing issues.”
