PANews reported on November 14 that, according to Bloomberg, Gary Wang, like a former FTX colleague who became a witness in the U.S. government, provided “outstanding” assistance to federal prosecutors in the case of encryptionexchangeFTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF). In seeking clemency, prosecutors said Wang had created “tools” to help the U.S. government detect other fraud. Federal prosecutors wrote in a sentencing document submitted on Wednesday: “Wang also provided a lot of assistance - and in the process took steps to correct past mistakes - using his extraordinary computer programming skills to detect potential fraudulent activities in the stock and Crypto Assets markets. Unlike other conspirators, Wang did not lie to clients, lenders, or investors, nor did he spend clients’ money.” Although prosecutors did not offer specific sentencing recommendations, the filed document asks the court to consider Wang’s outstanding cooperation. Prosecutors also stated that Wang was the first insider at FTX to cooperate with prosecutors, although there is little written evidence linking Wang to fraudulent activities. It is reported that Gary Wang is scheduled to be sentenced on November 20th for his role in the FTX collapse.
