How Many People Own USDT in the World? Tether Reveals Its New Report!
Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, reported in its latest report that as of the beginning of the 4th quarter of 2024, there are 109 million on-chain wallets holding USDT.
This figure is more than twice the number of wallets holding Bitcoin and approaching 128 million wallets holding Ethereum.
In addition to activities on the blockchain, centralized platforms have also become an important part of the USDT ecosystem. Tether reported that 86 million accounts on these platforms have invested USDT on the chain. Centralized exchanges recorded 4.5 billion web visits in the first three quarters of 2024, with nearly half of these visits (46%) coming from emerging markets. Many users in these regions primarily hold and use USDT within the platforms for transactions, but the exact balances are only known by the platforms.
In the report shared by Tether, here are some interesting data:
Active wallets: At least one-third (109 million) of the accounts on the 330 million chain that have bought USDT so far, and probably close to half of them still have USDT today.
Reactivation trends: The use of USDT tends to occur in a cycle for many users. Currently, approximately 29% of wallets holding less than $0.01 in USDT have been reactivated in the past, usually for recurring payments.
Interestingly, a significant portion of wallets have small balances. 18.7 million wallets hold more than 0.01 dollars but less than 1 dollar worth of USDT.
USDT continues to dominate the stablecoin sector with four times as many wallets as the total of all other stablecoins. As of November 1st, while 54 million on-chain wallets hold more than 0.01 dollars in USDT, this number is only 13.8 million wallets for all other stablecoins, revealing a surprising ratio of 4:1.
