Meta uses "Community Notes" for review and wins the approval of the encryption community

According to a statement on January 7th, Meta, the social media giant, is replacing its fact-checking program with a user-driven ‘Community Notes’ system. This follows the pattern adopted by X, in which users collectively identify and provide background for potentially misleading posts. This move has been endorsed by the encryption community. The platform added, ‘We believe this could be a better way to achieve our original intention, which is to provide people with information about the content they see - and this way is less likely to be biased.’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the change is aimed at simplifying the company’s complex content moderation policies, which have previously led to over-censorship and mistakes. By giving different users the right to shape their background information, Meta hopes to address bias issues while maintaining the free flow of ideas on its platform, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Zuckerberg emphasized that this shift aligns with Meta’s broader goal of returning to its roots as a center of free expression. In addition to launching Community Notes, Meta also plans to restore the visibility of political content in user feeds, reversing the earlier decision to downplay such content. Restrictions on sensitive topics such as immigration and gender will also be relaxed to accommodate a wider range of discussions.
