# US National Debt Surpassed Record $39 Trillion
The US national debt has increased from $0.32 trillion in 1966 to $39 trillion by March 2026. The US national debt exceeded the $35 trillion mark in mid-2024 amid an active phase of the presidential election campaign.
At that time, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump stated, "I think cryptocurrencies have a great future, and perhaps with their help we can pay off the $35 trillion debt."
In the crypto community, it is commonly believed that an increase in US national debt directly correlates with the rise in Bitcoin's price. Historically, since Bitcoin's creation in 2008, both indicators have shown a high correlation: as US debt increases, so does the price of the leading cryptocurrency. Many long-term forecasts by experts are based on this.
Less than two years after Trump's statements, the national debt grew by another $4 trillion by March 2026. The total debt accumulated during this period is nearly equal to the capitalization of the entire crypto market — $4.2 trillion, which was reached at its peak in October when Bitcoin was valued at $126 thousand.
