Seeking high-quality development through technology; seeking competitiveness through technology — Scan of the second "Member Channel" session at the Fourth Session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 7 - Title: Seeking High-Quality Development from Technology, Seeking Competitiveness from Technology - Scanning the Second “Committee Channel” of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference
Xinhua reporters Ye Haoming, Zou Duowei, Wen Jinghua
On the afternoon of March 7, at the Great Hall of the People, the second “Committee Channel” of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference was held as scheduled. Nine members of the National Committee walked onto the channel, sharing their voices and conveying confidence and strength.
High-speed trains are running at 450 kilometers per hour, embodied intelligence and multimodal artificial intelligence are presenting new highlights… The first to answer reporters’ questions was Wang Zhigang, former Minister of Science and Technology, who recounted a series of technological innovation achievements and the high-tech innovation empowerment behind them.
The “14th Five-Year Plan” period is a critical time to accelerate the realization of high-level technological self-reliance and strength, and to build a strong technological nation. Wang Zhigang stated that it is necessary to strengthen open cooperation in technology, seek high-quality development from technology, seek new productive forces from technology, and seek sustainable development and competitiveness from technology.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of China’s space industry. Liu Zheng, chief process engineer of the Capital Aerospace Machinery Company of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, calculated: it took 37 years from the first rocket launch of New China to the 100th launch, while the most recent 100 launches took just over a year.
“From following to leading, some technological innovations in China’s aerospace have already stepped into ‘unmanned areas’,” Liu Zheng said. Only through independent innovation can we gain the initiative in international competition.
Technological development promotes the rise of great powers and empowers daily life.
Your ID card has many hidden features: by aligning the personal information page with light, you can see the Great Wall watermark and the words “China CHINA”… Zhang Qiao, president of Suzhou University, “unveiled” the high technology hidden in the ID card, a technology born from university laboratories that has entered the daily lives of thousands of households.
Looking towards the “14th Five-Year Plan,” Zhang Qiao believes that universities should both “reach for the sky,” aiming at the forefront of technology and breaking through the boundaries of human cognition; and “root down,” taking root in the fertile ground of industry to solve practical problems for enterprises, truly writing papers on the land of the motherland.
Promoting technological progress and fostering a culture that respects science is an important part.
Xu Xing, director of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that there are young scientific workers who, after reading his popular science articles, embarked on the path of scientific research.
“I often share my personal experiences with children, telling them that science is actually very interesting, and scientists are really cool,” Xu Xing said, looking forward to more scientific workers engaging in science education in primary and secondary schools and contributing to China’s popular science endeavors.
The transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry cannot be separated from technological innovation and the integration of digital intelligence.
“Last year, our transformer exports grew by 71.4% year-on-year, and factory orders are booked until 2027. What is this based on? It’s based on continuous innovation investment,” said Nan Cunhui, chairman of Zhejiang Chint Group. Under the guidance of national strategies, relying on the advantages of an ultra-large-scale market, “Chinese manufacturing” is moving towards “Chinese intelligence manufacturing,” with broad prospects for transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry and a promising future.
Wang Xiaolong, general manager of Ningxia Fustai Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd., has a goal in mind: to truly equip China’s industrial mother machines with a “Chinese heart.”
In the process of tackling scientific research challenges, Wang Xiaolong and his team experienced countless cycles of “debugging - verifying - failing - restarting,” ultimately overcoming difficulties, and the developed machine tools are now capable of competing with top international equipment.
“What others can do, we can definitely do, and we can do it better!” he said.
Achieving technological leaps in high-tech fields and enhancing the well-being of people in high-altitude areas.
Wang Xuan, vice chairman of the Ningxia CPPCC, said that last summer, 30 families from Jiangsu came to the Qinghai Mutual North Long Mountain Health and Wellness Base, experiencing the unique charm of high-altitude wellness during a 15-day trip. When they left, they all said they would “speak for Qinghai” when they returned.
Wang Xuan stated that Qinghai is now relying on its ecological resource endowments, proposing a high-altitude wellness concept and utilizing the moderately low-oxygen environment at an altitude of about 2,000 meters, forging a unique path.
On the channel, two members showcased the development changes in Tibet from different perspectives.
In the past, it took a bumpy seven to eight hours to reach a treatment point; now, most common illnesses can be treated promptly at local township health centers. The implementation of “team-style” aid to Tibet has qualitatively improved local medical services… Ming Jicuo, a professor in the Tibetan Medicine Department of Tibet University of Traditional Medicine, said that with the country’s increased investment in public facilities and healthcare at the grassroots level, the former long journey to seek medical treatment has now been greatly shortened.
Zhao Mei, a researcher at the American Studies Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, recounted the feelings of her American friend after visiting Tibet: the streets and alleys of Tibet are peaceful, and people live and work in peace; the Jingzhang Railway is fast and smooth, with stunning scenery along the way; making phone calls from Lhasa to family in Boston, she was surprised at how clear the sound was. “He excitedly told me several times over the phone, ‘It’s amazing!’”
“The friendship between countries lies in the affection between their people. China will always embrace the world with an open posture, coexisting and communicating with different civilizations, promoting closer ties and mutual understanding among its people,” she said.
