🥲A woman in the US lost nearly $1 million in a cryptocurrency "pig-butchering" romance scam
According to Decrypt, a woman from San Jose, California, realized she was the victim of a cryptocurrency "pig-butchering" scam only after consulting ChatGPT, having lost nearly $1 million.
The victim, Margaret Loke, met a man claiming to be "Ed" on Facebook this May. He claimed to be a wealthy businessman and gradually established a romantic relationship. "Ed" then guided her into making cryptocurrency investments. Loke transferred over $490,000 from her retirement account and took out an additional $300,000 via a second mortgage on her house to invest.
When the so-called crypto account was suddenly "frozen," "Ed" demanded an extra $1 million to unfreeze the funds. Loke described the situation to ChatGPT, which responded that this setup matched known scam patterns and advised her to contact the police. Investigation revealed that the funds were transferred to a Malaysian bank account and then withdrawn by the scammer.
