The Evolution of Classic Internet Memes

The joke about Microsoft Edge originates from the early Internet Explorer (IE) meme and has evolved with updates to Microsoft’s browser.

Internet Explorer was notorious for slow speed, many vulnerabilities, and security issues. Users often joked that IE’s only purpose was to download Chrome. This idea gradually became a perennial joke in the tech community.

IE 5 and 6 were widely used and dominated the browser market. Among them, IE 6 was notorious for security vulnerabilities, non-standard HTML/CSS rendering, and frequent crashes. IE 7 improved security and introduced tabbed browsing, but its performance still lagged behind Firefox and Chrome. Eventually, Firefox and Chrome overthrew IE’s market dominance.

Microsoft replaced IE with Edge in Windows 10. Early reactions indicated that Edge was faster and more modern, but users still joked that its main purpose was to download Chrome.

Microsoft Edge currently holds about 5% of the global browser market share, much less than Chrome’s dominance (market share 62-68%).

On desktop, Edge usually accounts for about 11-12% of the market share.

As the pre-installed browser for Windows 10 and 11, this helps maintain its user base.

Criticism of Chrome

Schwartz also complained about Chrome’s excessive memory usage. In 2024, he posted a screenshot showing Chrome using 10GB of RAM.

In January 2025, he criticized Google for making “unfriendly user” changes in Chrome and Android, removing some features.

However, it is safe to say that Schwartz is unlikely to switch to Microsoft Edge in the short term.
