@WalrusProtocol is a decentralized data storage and availability protocol built on the Sui blockchain, allowing Web3 applications to store and manage large data files through Move smart contracts. Instead of merely storing and reading data, Walrus transforms storage into a programmable resource, enabling data to be controlled, automated, and interacted with directly on-chain.
The protocol allows for storing images, videos, game assets, AI data, or websites by splitting data into shards and distributing them across a peer-to-peer storage network. Each file is stored as an object on Sui, allowing smart contracts to manage access rights, state, and data processing logic. Walrus uses RedStuff erasure coding to ensure data can be recovered even if some shards are unavailable, increasing durability and optimizing costs.
#Walrus operates on a hybrid architecture: Sui handles metadata and logic, while data is stored off-chain, enabling the protocol to scale well while maintaining verifiability. The ecosystem is managed by the Walrus Foundation. The $WAL token is used for storage payments, network staking, and governance. WAL has a total supply of 5 billion tokens. In early 2025, Walrus raised $140 million with participation from major funds. With a focus on programmable storage and deep integration with Sui, Walrus targets Web3 and AI applications that require flexible, automated, and verifiable data.
