Monad has announced an upgrade plan called ‘MONAD_NINE’, featuring three significant MIP improvements expected to be implemented on the testnet and mainnet in the first half of February 2026. These changes aim to enhance processing performance and improve the predictability of the entire system. According to Foresight News, this trio of MIPs represents a substantial technical advancement in the development of the layer-two network.

MIP-3 EVM Memory Cost Change

The first upgrade in the MIP series is MIP-3 (Linear Memory), which will change the cost calculation mechanism for expanding memory on the EVM from quadratic to linear. This means costs will increase linearly rather than exponentially, allowing for more accurate predictions. The MIP-3 upgrade also sets a limit of 8 MB for memory usage per transaction, a measure designed to reduce resource load on the system and make resource consumption behavior more predictable.

MIP-4 and MIP-5: Enhancing Execution Capabilities

MIP-4 (Reserve Balance Check) is an innovative step as it introduces a new opcode that allows smart contracts to query detailed information during execution, especially to check for violations related to reserve balance rules. This feature provides greater flexibility, enabling contracts to adjust their logic or revert early when necessary.

Additionally, MIP-5 (Activate Fusaka EIP) will simultaneously deploy Ethereum’s Fusaka upgrade, including three major improvement proposals: EIP-7823, EIP-7883, and EIP-7939. This synchronization ensures that Monad stays aligned with the latest technical standards from Ethereum, creating compatibility and synergy between the two platforms.

Impact of MIP Improvements on Monad

This set of three MIPs not only simplifies network operations but also enhances user experience quality. With improvements in memory, reserve balance checks, and synchronization with Ethereum, Monad is building a more robust infrastructure. These MIP upgrades will help the network operate more stably, with more predictable costs, and better compatibility with other chains within the Ethereum ecosystem.
