Mexico City was affected by multiple blockades and worker protests

On Monday, January 19, Mexico City experienced a day of intense blockades and marches organized by various social groups. The main affected boroughs were Cuauhtémoc and Álvaro Obregón, where most of the demonstrations aimed to raise visibility for different causes.

IMSS March Demands Review of Healthcare Service Changes

One of the most significant mobilizations took place when active workers, retirees, and pensioners of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) held a large march from the Monument to the Revolution to the central offices located at Paseo de la Reforma No. 476, Juárez neighborhood. The protesters opposed the standardization of healthcare services, arguing that this measure would end the Collective Labor Contract for future generations of workers. The IMSS protest was scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and included newly hired workers along with retired personnel.

BTS Fans Demand Transparency in Ticket Sales

BTS fans, known as ARMY, organized their own demonstration demanding transparency regarding ticket sales for concerts. At 9:00 a.m., fans marched from Cuauhtémoc Metro Station on Line 1 to the Consumer Defense Office located in the downtown area “Leona Vicario.” This protest highlighted fans’ concerns about procedures and ticket availability.

Road Closures in Various Parts of the Capital

In addition to the main protests, several road closures were reported in different sectors of Mexico City. In Iztapalapa borough, residents blocked the side and central lanes of Calz. Ignacio Zaragoza near the Acatitla Metro, causing traffic congestion in that area.

Simultaneously, residents of Colinas del Sur neighborhood blocked Avenida Santa Lucía and Calle 30 from 6:00 a.m., in Olivar del Conde 2nd Section, Álvaro Obregón. These actions affected mobility in the western part of the city for several hours.

Protest Day at Public Buildings

Educators from the National Council for Educational Development demonstrated at the Zócalo of Mexico City at 6:00 a.m. as part of this day of unrest. Members of the Animal Network protested at 7:00 a.m. in front of the National Palace in support of the Franciscan Shelter, seeking to raise awareness about animal welfare issues.

The Anti-Gentrification Front blocked traffic at 8:00 a.m. in front of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation in the Centro neighborhood. Later, at 3:30 p.m., members of the Unity for the Defense of Labor Rights and Academic Dignity staged a blockade in front of the Secretariat of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation of Mexico City, located at Olivo No. 39, Florida neighborhood, Álvaro Obregón.

The convergence of these multiple demonstrations reflected the fabric of active social demands in Mexico City, with blockades from early morning until late afternoon, significantly affecting traffic at various strategic points across the city.
