Morgan Stanley: "Adoption in Crypto ETFs Still in Very Early Stages"

Morgan Stanley management stated that the widespread adoption process of crypto exchange-traded funds (ETF) is still in its initial phase. According to bank officials, financial advisors are still in the evaluation stage of how to integrate digital assets into traditional portfolio models.

Speaking at the DC Blockchain Summit held in Washington DC, Morgan Stanley Head of Digital Asset Strategy Amy Oldenburg drew attention to the composition of the investor base for crypto ETFs. Oldenburg stated that the majority of interest in spot crypto exchange-traded products (ETP/ETF) is currently coming from individual investors rather than institutional or advisor-managed accounts.

Approximately 80% of demand comes from individual investors

In her assessment regarding the positioning of crypto ETFs, Oldenburg pointed out that the process is still in its beginning stages. Emphasizing "this is a journey" on the panel, Oldenburg stated that digital asset integration on the side of institutional clients and advisor-managed portfolios is a process that unfolds over time.

Morgan Stanley opened Bitcoin ETF access in 2024

Morgan Stanley took an important step in 2024 by beginning to allow Bitcoin ETF purchases in brokerage accounts. Following this decision, the bank gradually expanded access to the aforementioned products.

In this context, access channels to crypto-based exchange-traded investment products for institutional clients and individual investors were increased. However, as Oldenburg pointed out, at the current stage, demand is still primarily driven by individual investors. This picture shows that the process of fully integrating crypto ETFs into traditional portfolio structures is ongoing.
