"Liberation from Digital Control" - The True Role of Ethereum as Demonstrated by Vitalik Buterin

Abstract generation in progress

Vitalik Buterin recently positions Ethereum as part of a larger movement. This is the concept of “Sanctuary Technology.” His proposal is not just about blockchain technology but questions the relationship between power structures and digital sovereignty in modern society.

What is “Sanctuary Technology” - A New Philosophy Proposed by Buterin

Vitalik Buterin calls the open-source tools that enable people to live, work, communicate, and cooperate resiliently against external pressures “Sanctuary Technology.” This is not about trying to control something but rather creating places to escape control.

There is a serious awareness behind this philosophy from the co-founder of Ethereum. It concerns the fact that the existing Ethereum ecosystem has not sufficiently contributed to areas like freedom, privacy, digital security, and community self-organization. He seeks practical solutions that allow individuals and organizations to act without vulnerability to power domination.

According to Buterin’s philosophy, this goal is described as “De-Totalization.” It aims to reduce the risk of a winner completely dominating the loser in global power struggles, while also lowering the chance of total defeat for the losers. In other words, it strives for a more pluralistic and decentralized world.

Limitations of Ethereum and Its True Mission - Not Just Finance

Vitalik Buterin also mentioned that Ethereum should focus on financial freedom. Certainly, financial freedom is important. But he points out that this alone does not address broader issues like power intervention, surveillance, and social division.

A key point is that Ethereum alone cannot change the world, and attempting to do so is inherently contradictory. Because a system trying to control the entire world resembles the centralized power structures Buterin warns against. Instead, Ethereum’s true role is to enable sustainable digital structures where people can participate actively.

Next Steps in Decentralization - Coordinating the Entire Tech Stack

The technologies Buterin cites as examples of “Sanctuary Technology” include a wide range of tools: Starlink satellite internet, large language models run locally, privacy-focused communication apps like Signal, and community-based verification functions like Community Notes. All of these are technologies that distance themselves from power control.

Buterin emphasizes that these technologies do not work in isolation. What is needed is clarity and coordination across the entire tech stack—from wallets and applications to operating systems and hardware. More importantly, focus should be on users who genuinely need sanctuary technology, collaborating with allies both inside and outside the crypto industry.

In essence, Buterin’s vision is realized only when diverse technologies, including Ethereum, function synergistically. He dismisses the illusion that a single technology or platform can save the world, advocating for a more realistic and pluralistic approach.
