The year I was in university, my family was poor, and I had to work part-time jobs to cover my living expenses. I worked as a server at a bar, where there was a hostess three years older than me who treated me very well and often gave me tips. I frequently drove my electric scooter to take her home when she was drunk.

The next day, she would buy me many daily necessities. When I said no, she would force them on me, saying I was her younger brother. That winter in Shanghai was so cold, with wind and snow everywhere. One evening while eating hot pot, she used the sauce I had dipped in, and with a slight buzz, said we're like a family.

In the car, she fell asleep in my arms and gave me two of her ID cards. She said I have two, so I'm giving you one. She said: "If I'm 28 and still not married, I'll marry you." That year I was 18, and she was 21. Later, I got accepted to graduate school, and she hugged me happily: My little brother is so capable, so my little brother needs to marry a talented girl, you're so promising. You could tell she was truly happy for me.

This year I'm 25, and she's 28. I called her for the first time in a year and asked: "You're 28 this year, will you still marry me?" There was a moment of silence on the other end, "What's wrong? Are you unwilling?" I asked nervously.

After a while, a voice with tears came through the phone: "I'm nodding."
