After 12 years of attempts, James Howells' story is finally taking an interesting turn. This British computer expert threw away a hard drive in 2013 containing 8,000 Bitcoin — at the time worth about $8 million, but today the value would have reached $742 million. Essentially, a digital fortune ended up in a landfill.
James Howells has never given up. He tried everything: drones, artificial intelligence, robots, elaborate plans to recover the device from the Newport landfill. But local authorities always said no, concerned about environmental risks and the release of toxic gases. Additionally, under British law, items discarded in landfills become the property of the site itself. Courts confirmed the ban, arguing that the chances of success were too low considering the equipment's deteriorated state after more than a decade.
But here’s the plot twist: a production company in Los Angeles has acquired the rights to turn James Howells' saga into a documentary series, podcast, and short videos. The project is called The Buried Bitcoin: James Howells' True Treasure Hunt. Howells himself said he’s excited, seeing the documentary as a way to share his incredible journey with the world.
What stands out is this guy’s determination. He never gave up, despite legal setbacks and failures. Now at least his story will have a global audience. Meanwhile, the market continues to move: Bitcoin around $66,910, Ethereum at $2,060, and BNB at $588. Howells’ story remains a reminder of how a simple decision — throwing away a hard drive — can turn into one of the biggest lessons on crypto wallet security.
