Just came across one of the most unsettling cases in crypto history, and honestly, it's been bothering me ever since. Back in March 2022, Sylwester Suszek—the co-founder and former president of BitBay, Poland's biggest crypto exchange—vanished without a trace. He was only 34 years old.
The circumstances are genuinely chilling. Suszek was last spotted at a fuel depot after a business meeting, and then he just disappeared. What makes it even more suspicious? The surveillance cameras at that exact location malfunctioned that same day. Police launched an extensive investigation, but found nothing.
His sister Nicole didn't give up though. She started her own investigation and uncovered some disturbing details. Four days after he vanished, his phone connected to a network somewhere along a highway—suggesting movement, but no sign of Sylwester himself. Then came the ransom demands.
Nicole received messages claiming someone had kidnapped and murdered her brother. But here's where it gets darker: there were voice recordings allegedly from Sylwester, though they sounded distorted and electronic. In one, the voice pleaded for help and demanded Bitcoin worth around 12 million PLN be sent to a specific address. The message included a threat: "This is not a joke, there will be a photo of the body in a week."
More recordings followed with threats of mutilation and demands to return home for Easter. Nicole refused to transfer the money, which was the right call, but the case took a toll on her too—she's faced threats herself.
Years later, Sylwester Suszek's fate remains unknown. His body was never found. Nicole still believes he was kidnapped and murdered, and the case remains open. It's a dark reminder that even in the crypto world, real dangers exist beyond market volatility and exchange hacks. This isn't just another headline—it's a family still searching for answers.
